Act with wisdom, but act. Remember, a choice is still an action whether you choose to act or not. Always think about what you are doing—and what it is you want—and choose wisely.
Let your actions guide your motivation… Once you take the first step towards achieving a result, each subsequent step becomes easier. The easier it gets, the more motivated you feel.
…and let joyful excellence guide your actions. Strive to create to the best of your ability but don’t lose sight of the joy, excitement, and satisfaction that comes from engaging with your art. If there is no sense of joy, take a step back and ask yourself: what could I be doing differently?
Remember that perfection is impossible… To declare your art as “perfect” or “finished” would be to render it “dead.”
…and that art lives in a state of perpetual irresolution. Treat your art as a “living thing.” A body that you can return to, revise, amend, challenge, and engage with. This is how art maintains its relevance.
What you create has power… Have you ever heard the term “art can change the world?”
…to support the status quo or to challenge it. Again, a choice is still an action and what you choose to do with your art has an impact. If the status quo does not support your art, you have two choices.
You can either change your art to fit the status quo… For some, this is simply a means of maximizing profits. For others, it is the only way to survive as an artist.
…or you can change the status quo using your art. This is the path of the artist-activist, the changemaker, whose goal in making art is *not* to “change the world,” but rather the hearts and minds of those who would argue the world cannot or should not be changed.
BUT HOWEVER YOU CHOOSE TO ACT…
Always stay true to yourself and your values… Let your creative process be improvisatory, spontaneous, unexpected, and liberating.
…and be willing to grow alongside other people.
