Thammarat aka Brennan Connell is a 22-year old Thai American songwriter, singer, performer, and activist from Bethesda, Maryland. His journey as a singer began in kindergarten after he discovered the joy and magic of the Barbie Cinematic Universe soundtracks. He began taking formal voice lessons in middle school, and in 8th grade, got accepted into the Interlochen Center for the Arts summer voice program. By high school, he was participating in choir ensembles at the county and state level, including his school’s tenor/bass, chamber and a cappella ensembles, Maryland County Youth Chorus, Maryland All-State, and the GenOUT Youth Chorus.
As the son of two human rights lawyers, social justice and activism have long been at the forefront of Brennan’s musical practice. He is particularly passionate about increasing AAPI and LGBTQ+ representation in the music world and beyond, and many of his song lyrics depict his experience as a member of the LGBTQ+ and AAPI communities. His practice is informed by a profound belief that music is a tool for positive change and that his role as a singer activist is not simply to “change the world” but the hearts and minds of those who argue the world cannot or should not be changed.
