When he was a kid, a listener once said of Thammarat’s performance, “I can’t believe that giant voice is coming from that small child!” Born in Thailand and raised in the suburbs of Maryland, Thammarat (also known as Brennan Connell) has uplifted countless audiences with a voice that has been described as enchanting, powerful, and reminiscent of artists like Ben Platt, Josh Groban, and David Archuleta. The socially engaged singer, songwriter, and performer began his vocal training in middle school, starting with opera and classical music. He later transitioned to musical theater in high school before settling on contemporary pop, R&B, and singer-songwriter styles in college. He currently releases music on Spotify and other streaming platforms while balancing his life as a Contemporary Music student at The New School in New York.
As a performer, Thammarat has sung with numerous D.C./Maryland-based ensembles, most notably the GenOUT Youth Chorus (2015-2021), with appearances at the Kennedy Center, Washington National Cathedral, White House, Library of Congress, and the 2016 GALA Choruses Festival. He was also a Teen Choir member for the 2018 Horatio Alger Awards ceremony at DAR Constitution Hall and a featured speaker and soloist at the 2019 plaque dedication ceremony honoring Matthew Shepard.
Thammarat’s original songs—a mix of indie, synth, and chamber pop—are vessels through which he explores and articulates his lived experiences as a queer, gender-expansive person of color. Whether he is singing about love, life, politics, or queerness in general, he approaches every production with a passion, maturity, and virtuosity that belies his young age, challenges expectations, and creates an intimate and personal experience for his listeners. His newest single, Normal, came out on January 31, 2025, and he is working on an album set to be released in the summer of 2025.
